Jette and I rode bikes 'into town', which I just keep referring to as downtown Århus. She showed me around a bit, but our main reason for going into town was for a birthday party. Århus has been quite lively during my stay here much due to the fact that there is a big festival going on. There's stages set up throughout the town and often live music... extra shops, and special amusements for children. So I've been fooled into thinking Århus is just a big party all the time!
A point of special interest for me was the Domkirke. 'Kirke' means 'church' and since it is the 'dom', it is the main or head church of the area. As far as I understand it. The height and recognizability of the church helped me find my way time and time again and really prevented me from getting lost!
This is the Domkirke, to the left:
Also, as you can see there is a grassy and tree-filled area... which is not usually there! It was installed specially for the festival and they'll just REMOVE IT when the festival is over!!! Doesn't that seem odd...?
Inside the Domkirke, which had me in complete awe since it was my first time seeing such a nice cathedral:
For the festival, they had these huge bubbles that you could bounce around in on the canal. Looked like fun!
I saw an advertisement for Seattle which I got a kick out of, of course!
This is an especially cute street in downtown Århus:
After riding through town a bit, we headed to the apartment of a friend of Jette's for the birthday party of a girl turning 15. It was so nice! I loved it. It was great seeing all of those young and happy faces and two beautiful layer cakes. One was a Twilight cake! There were mashed up raspberries for blood on it and little silver candies on it. I guess the girls here are crazy about Twilight too. I had a really nice time talking to the birthday girl and her two siblings about what kind of music we like, and had many similarities in what musicians we like. It was funny because we were trying to think of American bands/artists we like, and we kept naming bands that we then realized were Canadian or English... hmm. I wish I had some photos from the birthday party but since I didn't really know them, of course I felt taking photos would have been rather intrusive...
After a really nice time, we returned 'home'.
i feel like a terrible friend for just finding this now! you've been overseas for like 20 days and i'm just now realizing that, wow. haha. i'm glad that it looks like you've been having a good time. idk if you are able to get on facebook but maybe we'll get to chat sometime! i love all the pictures, it looks so beautiful!!
